Gods musical procession
Psalm 68
1 You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry--now restore us!
Psalm 68
1 You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry--now restore us!
2
You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking.
3
You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger.
4
But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. "Selah"
5
Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered.
6
God has spoken from his sanctuary: "In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Succoth.
7
Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my scepter.
8
Moab is my washbasin, upon Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph."
9
Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?
10
Is it not you, O God, you who have rejected us and no longer go out with our armies?
11
Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
12
With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. This is a national Psalm describing the terrible conditions that the citizen had to endure under the rule of evil men. This Psalm teaches us the very practical application of the opposition to the elect and the natural longings of the hearts of all citizens in a country gone astray. We see that God has created nations who prosper ....to decline by His decrees.
Gods control over nations is His description of the perfect interaction between leaders and citizens under the rule of His peace. But because mens hearts are evil and they plot to overthrow Gods laws, decrees statutes and covenants there is a natural declension in society that cannot be redeemed by man. We see here that Gods number one purpose in creating the history of societies is to uphold the weak and fatherless.
The great war with grace is both spiritual and political. Under the rule of man societies decline because the natural man is his own god. Man by nature seeks to overpower the weakest person in the cultural link. God has given His law and Spirit as the agents to slow down this declension. But God has honored mans authority over the creation by upholding each man as his own government. God has provided man with gifts and promises in order to show His glory in man. The health of society is measured by Gods relational decrees and not necessarily on prospering by the work ethic.
Evil is not just an attempt to do someone else wrong. But evil is also placing limits on man so that he is prevented from accomplishing all that God has gifted him with. Gods perfect description of every man is His correct view of their value. So when the Psalms describe the enemy of Gods purposes it is always pointing to the "plot" of wicked men who "scheme" against the goodness of God to prosper man according to the gifts that He has given to them and to prevent their fellow man from using these gifts. In this way all societies are under an obligation of a collective evil in which they must act pragmatically in order to pursue their holistic experience in this life by opposing the evil that prevents them from using their gifts. In this way also every society is under the obligation to oppose a philosophy that is moving on its own, inhibiting man from expressing himself as God created him ...in which this struggle increases as the society declines. This is what the Psalmist means when He says that the" help of man is worthless."
We see here that God has created all men with a view from their own inward government as the basis of communicating Gods glory. Every man who accomplishes this is united under the collective pursuit of Gods purposes. When it says that "God gives them wine that makes them stagger" it really is that God is preventing pain as a physician. It is in the context as an anti thesis of God raising a banner. This is really interesting.
The banner in my opinion is these singers and musicians playing music as they go out to fight in war. God has gifted us with expressing our struggles...both spiritual and political as a way to unite our purpose. God has established this way in order to oppose the enemy. I do not think it is focused on how the nation is brought together through the music but its how we win the war because God is pleased with hearing us express our spiritual and political sorrows along with His praises.
22
The Lord says, "I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
23
that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share."
24
Your procession has come into view, O God, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
25"
In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the maidens playing tambourines".
In Psalm 68 there is a very clear difference between the fighting machines of the nations and the procession that goes out from Israel. In this case they are coming to the temple after victory.. The nations are rugged and hostile...representing the rugged mountains that surround Israel. But Israel is on mount Zion and its character is like a lamb . lol So this procession has the musicians out front because God has created war as a method to unite men under His power and not on mans power. thats enough.
