If you study the Psalms you will find there are very distinct terms in identifying Gods people from the wicked. Let me give you a sample of one of the uses of this identity we enjoy. Psalm 941 The Lord is a God who avenges.
O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Rise up, Judge of the earth;
pay back to the proud what they deserve
In this Psalm we see there is a complaint about these governments that are ruthless. In our definition these are totalitarian governments. Here the psalmist is praying in a cursing way..."Pay back the proud what they deserve. " First we do not explain the context of the Psalms exclusively by Davids personal experience as he wrote the specific Psalm but the Psalms are using the identities of different men within the context of the over all teaching about salvation in the bible. The "proud" are not just those men who seek to over throw the government of Israel, but the Psalmist is making a doctrinal statement about a universal struggle between Gods people and the wicked rulers. If you separate the identity of the "proud" in saying that it is in the context of this political psalm then you have a social gospel. Its obvious in such a dogmatic statement that the Psalmist is speaking of the wicked as the group that is identified as the "proud."
We can also see that this is very much related to justification by faith. Gods government on this earth is absolute. This all ties into how we view Gods relationship with the king who represents Gods elect. God provided Israel with His presence by going before them as a fire by day and a light by night. You have this peculiar relationship that describes this legal innocence of Gods people as the Lord going out before Gods people to be their defense against all of those who oppose them. This analogy is really a teaching of justification by faith. The righteous by declaration are opposed by the nations who are populated by men who are proud. We see this heart in the Psalmist to protect the elect by decreeing victory over the proud as the analogy of our position of justification by faith.
