Psalm 12[a]
For the director of music. According to sheminith.[b] A psalm of David.
1 Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;
those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
2 Everyone lies to their neighbor;
they flatter with their lips
but harbor deception in their hearts.
those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
2 Everyone lies to their neighbor;
they flatter with their lips
but harbor deception in their hearts.
3 May the Lord silence all flattering lips
and every boastful tongue—
4 those who say,
“By our tongues we will prevail;
our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”
and every boastful tongue—
4 those who say,
“By our tongues we will prevail;
our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”
5 “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan,
I will now arise,” says the Lord.
“I will protect them from those who malign them.”
6 And the words of the Lord are flawless,
like silver purified in a crucible,
like gold[c] refined seven times.
I will now arise,” says the Lord.
“I will protect them from those who malign them.”
6 And the words of the Lord are flawless,
like silver purified in a crucible,
like gold[c] refined seven times.
7 You, Lord, will keep the needy safe
and will protect us forever from the wicked,
8 who freely strut about
when what is vile is honored by the human race.
and will protect us forever from the wicked,
8 who freely strut about
when what is vile is honored by the human race.
This is a Psalm that teaches how important the tongue is in creating value in the course of history. The Psalms teach that everything that has ever been born into existence comes from God speaking it into existence. When the Psalms talk about Gods will not being thwarted it is talking about Gods perfect description of all things that are in existence, both His creative word and His re-creative word cannot fail in bringing Himself good in the end.
A lot of people teach that we are a product of a two line universe. If there are two lines then we face tension because these two lines do not always unify but they are two perspectives that happen in the same event and at the same time. They teach that this tension is taught by the apostle when he is talking about the war with flesh.
If there is tension then our resisting is described as our having more power than the object that we are struggling with. If the powers on one side are potentially able to be strong enough to over come our existence then it is the same thing as saying that God and Satan have equal power in us. Do you know why you feel more frustrated and divided when you hear this? Because this is teaching that the christian life is divided into the secular and the religious and you wont experience real kingdom authority until you die. You really are two people who will be joined together in eternity.
The danger in thinking that we oppose Satan through a struggle by our being controlled by the Spirit is to communicate a lower view of God than the bible teaches. If I were to teach two line in this way then I could control God and in controlling God I could control you. Because short of destruction I could describe your struggle any way I wanted to with one verse here and one verse there.
We see in this Psalm that we are not identified as a person who is a product of our own mind and choices. But the whole course of history is created by man in speaking an image and is judged by God and overturned by His description of the perfect history. These patterns of speech that form our world view are more powerful than we think. We see that man in redefining Gods world has destroyed Gods creation by giving the present generation an imaginary way to create their lives by presenting arguments that allow people to redefine Gods creative word. What is allowed in the human experience will always be the basis of how we communicate and create. This Psalm is a war Psalm asking God to silence this dangerous world view that is even deceiving the elect. ill stop here but there is so much more to understand.
