Ps 46 1God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble."
The Psalmist is teaching that when we think of control as men it is limited. It is limited to time and space. In this sense being in the time sequence is being subject to the control of the finite. It is the source of our inward struggle. We struggle to use our time wisely so that we will be accepted. We never can enjoy the present because time is always moving from the future to the past. So time is always pointing us to the past...what we could have done. But the truth is that we live in a world that is controlled by God.
God has revealed His grand control. Every time we are confronted with a tornado, hurricane, ice storm or war we are faced with uncertainty and a lack of control. And yet we were originally created with the ability to control the earth by ruling over the creation. When we fell into sin the earth became our enemy. In the garden everything worked together to create order and peace. But when the earth was cursed, violence and disorder dominated the creation. The question is if Christ has come and obtained the possession of all things then is there a way to return to our the creation covenant. Can we control the cursed earth?
The answer found in the pronouncements. We are born in the infancy of understanding that God created us to be like Himself. How did God bridge this problem of a very powerful opposition in nature? He gave us natural and special revelation with the understanding that we would face opposition. This is why the curses and the decrees are spoken on the level of Gods control over nature. The truth is that God has revealed Himself in the events that we cannot control. But at the same time He has united His control over nature with our desire to destroy all opposition in the curse and the decree. You see that in order for God to speak it must be more than in word form. God must show us that we can control time. So God acts to break into time.
God creates tornado's, hurricanes, ice storms and war. Just as the Psalmist teaches that nature pours forth speech so also are the events of these disasters. God speaks the curses and the events break into time. He has given us this interior experience of eternity breaking into time. Gods curses and decrees are much worse than we could ever imagine. We are consumed by the pronouncements. When the curse and the blessing come together we experience eternity breaking into time. The experience is like being in one of these disasters. But God unites the pronouncements with the experiences of the disasters. Just as the curses lead us down to the lowest parts of our culture so they help us push the curse down in the storms. This is why the Psalmist is showing that after the disaster we can watch the results and it cries out to be still and know that I am God.Just like Gods work in natural disasters is mysterious so to pronouncing the axioms bring us the mystery of blessing and cursing. We are overcome with a spirit of awe.
